George Soros’ Net Worth
George Soros has a net worth of $24.9 billion.
The well-known hedge fund manager spent decades accumulating more money than you or I could dream of. After his lucrative career, Soros has retired to a life of philanthropy and recreation. (Source: “The World’s Billionaires; #23 George Soros,” Forbes, last accessed March 3, 2016.)
But his main company, Soros Fund Management, continues to rake in the dough. Here are a few amazing things you may not know about this remarkable billionaire.
1. Soros Started a Fund with Only $12.0 Million
In 1970, George Soros launched the now famous Soros Fund Management. Unlike hedge funds today, which often start with hundreds of millions, Soros only had $12.0 million committed to the fund. That didn’t stop him from making a boatload of cash though. Using his unparalleled trading instincts, Soros made huge bets on currencies and other financial assets. (Ibid.)
2. He Trained Other Great Hedge Fund Managers
Have you ever heard of Jim Rogers? He became a billionaire during the time he spent with Soros at his investment fund. He eventually left to set up his own shop, but I’m sure it was easier to raise funds when people knew you’d been beside George Soros for all those years. Jim Rogers may not be a billionaire, but he’s got a comfortable $300 million, much of which he made under the tenure of Soros.
3. The Man Who Broke the Bank of England
It’s not enough that Soros is a billionaire; he also has a really cool nickname. Investors casually refer to him as “The Man Who Broke the Bank of England,” a reference to his famous bet against the British pound. In 1992, Soros saw a discrepancy in the pound sterling and sold short more than $10.0 billion worth of the currency. He made $1.0 billion off that one trade. 4. Soros Has Published Best-Selling Books on Investing
In case you haven’t read it, go and buy The Alchemy of Finance by George Soros. It is one of the most popular finance books of all time. Many people might now know that Soros is a trained academic who studied under the philosopher Karl Popper. That background in academia gave him the skills to take his investing wisdom and package it into a full-fledged theory he calls “reflexivity.”
5. He’s the 23rd Richest Person Alive
Soros is currently no. 23 on the “Forbes 100” list. His net worth is at an all-time high of $24.9 billion. (Source: “The World’s Billionaires; #23 George Soros,” Forbes, last accessed March 3, 2016.) He keeps getting richer even though he hasn’t actively managed funds in a while. But that’s okay—Soros is exceedingly generous with his money. Over the years, he’s donated hundred of millions to various philanthropic efforts. His charitable organisations have often come under political scrutiny in the U.S., but whether you love him or hate him, there’s no denying that George Soros is savvy investor.
